Work description
Established in 1946, Aspen Skiing Company is one of the leading resort organizations in the world. Located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, our locations include four world-class mountains (Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Snowmass, and Buttermilk) and The Little Nell, a five-star, five-diamond luxury hotel at the base of Aspen Mountain. Our storied history and high quality of service have led to The Little Nell being named a Forbes Five-Star hotel for over 30 consecutive years and a AAA Five-Diamond property for over three decades. Aspen Skiing Company Hospitality Division is responsible for operating a private residence club, 4 hotels, 2 private ski clubs, and 12 restaurant operations on 4 ski mountains located in west-central Colorado. We employ approximately 300 year-round employees, and we have ongoing peak load needs each winter season, during which we regularly recruit up to 100 seasonal employees. During the winter months of each year, the high volume of tourists attracted by the Rocky Mountain regions world-class ski and snowboard terrain drives a substantial peak in resort occupancies across the region. Events and activities in the Aspen and Snowmass area during this period include downhill skiing and snowboarding across our four mountains, holiday-season travel, and winter recreational events. As a result, we see a peak-load increase in hotel reservations and occupancies during the months of November through April, requiring additional workers to assist with the housekeeping duties of our hotels. Despite the generous pay and benefits we offer, it has been impossible for Aspen Skiing Company to find the necessary number of temporary workers to meet our peak load needs. The high cost of living in Aspen and temporary nature of the position does not attract an adequate number of U.S. applicants, which results in Aspen Skiing Company being understaffed. Furthermore, The Little Nell shuts down from mid-April through May due to the shortage of tourists during the off-season. The decreased revenue during these months prevents us from being able to employ 100 additional workers year-round on top of the approximately 300-yearround workers we already employ. Although we have successfully filled the majority of our peak load need for additional workers with US workers for the upcoming winter/early spring season, we find that we have a small number of additional positions still available. Therefore, we now seek to hire up to 10 temporary foreign workers during this peak load season. If we are unable to sufficiently meet our Housekeeper/Room Attendant staffing needs, we will find ourselves unable to satisfy our guests needs and expectations. This would drastically impair our reputation as a five-star resort and lead to decreased occupancy and revenue in future seasons. Accordingly, we now request certification to fill up to 10 additional Housekeeper/Room Attendant positions that are required to meet our temporary peak load staffing needs. Occupancy records for The Little Nell for calendar years are attached. We appreciate the Department's consideration of this Statement of Peakload Need and respectfully request certification of Aspen Skiing Company's temporary peak load need for up to 10 Housekeeper/Room Attendant positions in support of the enclosed application. If you require any additional information, please do not hesitate to contact the undersigned at (970) 920-6326. Respectfully submitted, Alexandra Streblow Senior Director of Human Resources The Little Nell & Limelight Hotels Aspen One
