U.S. healthcare basics

A short glossary to help you understand your plan and how care works in the United States.

Network

A group of doctors, clinics, and hospitals that have agreed to specific rates. Using in-network providers typically costs less.

Deductible

The amount you pay before your plan starts sharing the cost of covered care.

Urgent care vs. emergency room

Urgent care treats non-life-threatening issues at a lower cost. Emergency rooms are for conditions that could be life-threatening — for a real emergency, always call 911.

Pre-certification

Approval that must be requested in advance for certain services. Skipping this step can significantly reduce or eliminate the benefit paid.

Workers' compensation boundary

This plan does not cover expenses that workers’ compensation pays or makes available — the two systems serve different purposes.

Family coverage

Gold and Silver cover your family members only while they are also outside their home country, for example if they travel with you to the U.S. They do not cover family who stay at home.

Before you start enrollment
