Work description

Worker will operate a farm tractor and feed mixer to prepare and deliver a daily ration of hay, silage, and protein supplement at about 47 lbs per head per day. Worker will load and haul hay and silage and keep feeding records. Worker will sort cows by expected calving date, and move cows close to calving into calving pastures. Ready calving pens, supplies, and equipment. Worker will check cows day and night, including scheduled night checks. Assist cows with difficult births and tag and process newborn calves. Pair cows with calves and care for weak or chilled calves. Worker will wean, gather, sort, and load summer-born calves for sale. Worker will gather and sort cattle on horseback. Pull bulls from the cow herd around Thanksgiving and turn bulls out with the cows on or around February 1. Feed and care for weaned calves during backgrounding and watch for sickness. Break ice on water sources, and perform routine maintenance on the tractor, mixer, and feeding equipment.
